Do Pinterest Moms Actually Exist?!?

Moms, today is the day to give yourself some grace.

Are you always trying to be perfect?  Making sure your kid looks just right or you never run out of anything in your house?  Yeah that’s not really me either. {Note my toilet paper post from a few days ago.}

Today I have been so on-point it’s borderline ridiculous but let me tell you that is so far from the norm.  We had three appointments in a row and managed to squeeze in some much needed grocery shopping too.  I managed to remember snacks for my tiny and myself, both showered and dressed before 8am, back home for a proper lunch before putting away dishes and folding the load of laundry that had been in my dryer for at least a few days.  My patience is typically lacking, I use dry shampoo more days than actual shampoo, I spend most of my time in leggings, I despise winter so my dog’s “walks” consist of him running around in the yard after the turkeys, my sink is generally full of dishes that need washing and my dryer is always fluffing a load probably from a week ago.

But life is not about being perfect.  So today, give yourself some grace.  The dishes can always wait, those clothes can be fluffed one more time and there is never a time limit of how long you are allowed to snuggle those little ones.

It’s not about perfection or trying to keep up with the mom next to you in preschool drop-off because heaven knows she is probably a hot mess underneath it all too.  It’s about choosing to be PRESENT in your life and let the idea of PERFECTION go.  It’s about allowing yourself GRACE in the face of well . . . LIFE.

Run, Don’t Walk, Away From Resolutions

If I learned anything from the past 2 years, it’s to say *SCREW RESOLUTIONS* and make some EPIC GOALS instead.  I’ve found that when we do the typical NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS, we make them vague and almost haphazard.

“I want to lose weight.”

“I want to get healthy.”

“I want to get a new job.”

But, that completely loses sight of the question, well, how are you going to get there?  What happens if you don’t lose weight in the first week, first month, etc of that new year?  Are you going to give up?  Throw in the towel?

Wouldn’t it be better to give yourself attainable goals?  Or BIG-A$$ Goals that you can quantify?  You can see that progress is being made?  If you could tell you were working towards a goal, even if making baby steps, would that not keep you going?

I was that person to always say, this year, I’m going to workout and lose weight.  I’m going to eat better but then February or maybe even March rolls around and I start to slack, which in turn snowballs into me completely forgetting all about that New Year’s Resolution come June.

Now is the time to set yourself up for SUCCESS, to keep going no matter what.  Instead of simply saying “I want to lose weight”, why not say “This year, I want to lose 15 pounds”?  Then you can quantify that along the way.  In 12 months, that’s under 1.5 pounds a month.  That seems doable, don’t you think?!?  Then when you don’t lose those 15 pounds in your first month, you are less likely to throw in the towel.

This year, that is what I have done.  But in all aspects of my life.

This year:

  • I will read 10 personal development books
  • I will workout 250 times
  • I will lose 20 pounds to be back at my “fighting weight”
  • I will set aside 2 nights a month for a date night with my husband
  • I will set aside once a week to do some self-care for myself

Give it a try for yourself and let me know how you get on.

Thursday Taste: Easy Egg Cups

This is real life.

I’m not a chef. I’m not trained. I’ve actually always had this thought that cooking was meant to be hard, take a long time to make anything worthwhile and always steered towards the “easy” way.

Truth is. I am simply a mom, trying to make a healthy lifestyle change for myself and my family.

Truth is. Most of the meals I make are NOT “Instagram worthy”. But you know what. That is real life. That is mom life.

Truth is. Most of the time I suck the first time I make something. But I keep at it. I keep trying.

And today I learned that I will not use baking cups when making egg cups again . . .

Ingredients:

  • Nonstick spray or reusable silicone baking cups
  • 1/2 cup Almond Milk
  • 2 cups Egg Whites
  • 1 cup chopped peppers and onions
  • Dash of himalayan salt and ground pepper, if desired

Instructions:

1. Preheat oven to 350° F.

2. Line a twelve-cup muffin tin with fun silicone baking cups or spray with nonstick cooking spray. Set aside.

3. Combine almond milk and egg whites in a medium bowl. Season with salt and pepper, if desired; whisk to blend. Set aside.

4. Evenly divide chopped peppers and onion between prepared muffin cups.

5. Evenly pour egg white mixture over onions and peppers.

6. Bake for 20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of egg cups comes out clean, and eggs are set.

7. Enjoy!

Sorry Kid, You Can’t Eat That

Surprisingly, I have gone back and forth about writing this post.  Then it hit me, while watching a segment about allergies on Kathy Lee and Hoda on the Today Show – the whole reason I started my journey in public was for other moms like me to not feel alone.

I was “that mom”, the one who wanted to do everything in my power to ensure my son was not immune to the world, especially as a first time mother.  I wasn’t scared of dirt or germs.  Now, don’t get me wrong, I was cautious but tried not to be crazy.

Early on in his tiny human life we found out that my son had eczema.  No problem, trips to the tiny human dermatologist and some extra tlc and lotion.  But, when we couldn’t seem to get his eczema under control, our pediatrician suggested that we do a few tests to see if it could be something else – allergies.  This all happened pretty early on, prior to trying solid foods with him.   At the time, I didn’t think anything of it.  In my head, I wasn’t worried.  I have never had allergies and my husband didn’t either, so I just assumed the tests would come back normal.  Well, if you haven’t guessed yet, I was wrong.  When the doctor phoned to see if I had time to talk, I was scared.  My little guy was allergic to nuts and seeds and egg.  I had so many emotions running through my head it was spinning.  I was scared, nervous, angry, sad . . I could go on and on.  I wanted to learn as much as I could about them from how severe they were to what I need to look out for and what to do if he has a reaction.

What scared me more than any of this was that our pediatrician only tested a few items initially.  How we found out Brodie was allergic to GLUTEN was due to a major skin reaction during a playgroup where flour was being used.  He had his hands in the flour bin for all of two minutes before moving on and all of a sudden his entire body started to break out in red hives and my mom instincts took over.  Luckily it was only a skin reaction and I got him to the doctor as fast as I’ve ever done anything in my life.  A few hours at the doctor and dose of Benadryl made the reaction go away.

All of a sudden, I felt the world was against us and that I had done something wrong to give this to him.  You get nervous going out to eat.  You are anxious when you go to playgroups.  You worry that you can’t protect him.  Anytime we would leave the house, I would be attempting to analyze our locations – try to see if I can find anything that could potentially set off an allergic reaction.  I became a nervous wreck . .on the inside.  My diaper bag and purse ALWAYS have an epi-pen and Benadryl, just in case.  But you can’t live life like that, I would be going crazy.  Now it’s about being as cautious as I can and being prepared.

I will say this; my emotional battle has gotten better.  You find that because allergies are more common now that the world has had to adjust to some extent.  Most restaurants have gluten-free menus and scratch kitchens and are more aware of allergies.  You do find your favorites – places that are more aware and better at accommodating.  You learn to read the packaging and ingredient lists on EVERYTHING.  I mean who knew Ben and Jerry’s ice cream was made with eggs??!  Or that most gluten-free bread added eggs to their ingredient list?

In this day and age, it’s important for all parents, whether or not your child has allergies, be informed.  Ask questions.  Know what to do if you are with a child who has an allergic reaction. Be proactive – know if any of the children under your supervision have allergies and be aware of what’s in the food you’re feeding those children and what is in your home.

Mommin ain’t easy but I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world.

BREAK IT DOWN: The Ultimate Reset

I’m going to get REAL with you for a minute here.  I just conquered the Beachbody Ultimate Reset and I’m here to tell you all about it.  It’s a 21 day cleanse for your whole body broken into three weeklong segments.  Each week comes with its own set of challenges but believe me when I tell you that you still get to eat, it’s just under strict guidelines.  This is no juice cleanse.  It is not a quick fix.  It is about retraining your brain and your body with how you look at nutrition, how you process food.  This is about getting rid of bad habits that may be stumping your progress and hopefully creating new ones.

Each week you will cut more and more out of your diet.  Starting with refined foods and animal products then eventually grains and legumes, which will have you eating a diet of fruits and veggies for your final week.  I loved that it was a gradual process and not cutting everything out all at once.

Each day you will eat 3 meals and 1 snack (which is optional).  And yes you can still have your Shakeology, of the Vegan variety (of which there are now more options!!)
For me, doing this detox was about getting over a plateau that I had been struggling with ever since I stopped breastfeeding my son.  It was about stripping down my nutrition to figure out what is and what isn’t working well with my body.
There were two issues that came up for me while on the reset: First, NO WORKING OUT FOR 21 DAYS.  That was more of a struggle for me than I ever thought it would be. But when you spend the last year focusing on your health and fitness, my workouts had become more of an outlet for me and I didn’t fully realize that until this moment.  And second, I was forced to cook up three separate meals every night.  Yikes.  My son has quite a few allergies so he gets his own dinner, then my husband and finally my own dinner.  This got old for me real quick so lucky for me they also have what they call the “Reset In A Crunch” meal plan which became my saving grace.
Here is a sampling of my meals during my 21 Days:
I won’t lie to you.  I did have a cheat or 2 during my 21 days.  But I didn’t let it get me off track and I jumped right back on the plan ASAP.  It is also imperative that you hydrate, so lots and lots of water.  Aim for a gallon of water a day.
image
This program is hard but YOU WILL GET RESULTS!  Stick with it for 21 days and you will feel better, you will lose weight, you will cleanse your body of all that nasty stuff, you will have created better habits and broken yourself of bad habits.
My results were quite astounding: down exactly 10 pounds and over 4 inches in my waist and hips alone.  But now it’s about how I continue to keep moving forward and not ruin my results by going back to my old ways.
