Mommy Needs A Minute

Gone are the days of me thinking of it solely as “Self-Care Sunday”, now I feel like it’s better to happen whenever YOU need it.  With an, at-times, blurry line of work/life balance and more and more people working to get healthier, this is something that should be happening more than simply once a week.


It’s not only about healing muscles, but in relaxing your mind and spirit too.  Being overworked and stretched to the limit can have serious effects on you on all levels.


I have found in the last year that I can have a habit of slacking on my self-care, and I know, as a mom, we all have this tendency.  You put everyone else first and then, when and if there is anything left, that is when you take care of you.


When you focus on YOU, then you will become better with taking care of everyone else.


Here are some great ways to give YOURSELF a little TLC:

  • Meditation: A simple way to start. Give yourself an extra 5 or 10 minutes every morning or evening to relax your mind.  You can do this yourself by getting into a quiet space, sit or lie down, close your eyes and just focus on your breathing.  You can also find some great (free) apps to help with this, if you would like more a guided meditation.
  • Bath: Add some Epsom salt for tired, sore muscles, maybe some candles or dimly light the room for a bit more peace
  • Massage: Please Mamma’s . . need I say more?!?
  • Manicure / Pedicure: I’m not a big manicure fan.  I just don’t seem to find it relaxing but I LOVE a good pedicure!  I like to listen to audio books, close my eyes and zone out.
  • Yoga Class: Hot or not, it just feels good to stretch it all out.  Get out of your head and let the chill yogi vibes (???) take over.
  • Foam Rolling: I won’t lie; this was a bit strange for me at first but go with me here. These are great for helping with muscle relief.  They come in what feels like a million variations so if you are new to this maybe go check some out at the store.  Places like Target or Dick’s carry them.  Start slow and build your way up.  I know add this to the stretching portion after almost every workout.
  • Sleep: This is so much more crucial to having a healthy body and mind than most people give it credit for. Start by tracking your sleep and seeing how you feel.  How many hours a night do you get?  Is it hard for you to fall asleep?  Do you struggle in the morning?  Maybe you could try going to bed a little earlier each night or giving yourself some time to simply relax before hitting the sack to see if that helps you.
