Since college, I had always struggled with my weight. It was one diet and crazy fad after another. And believe me, I tried them ALL! This Isn’t Your Best Friend’s Juice Cleanse – What To Expect From The 3 Day Refresh

I was in between workout programs and decided why not give the 3 DAY REFRESH a try.  My husband was going to be away for 2 of the days so there would be no temptation with his potentially glutinous dinners.

I’m not going to lie, going into my 3 days, I was feeling nervous, not knowing exactly what to expect.  Should I plan to stay in the house for 3 days (if you know what I mean)??!

Here are the basics of what to expect:

  • They’re permitted but better to stay away from coffee or tea
  • No milk, sugar or substitutes
  • No cheese, meat or dairy
  • Make sure you aren’t planning to do any strenuous activity – keep it mild to moderate – think yoga
  • You will want to stay hydrated as this will help your body and the program to work properly – so think at least 75 ounces of water a day – starting with 8 – 12 ounces when you first wake up
  • Your body will be taking in a solid dose of FIBER so be warned that this may cause some extra gas or bloating – it is COMPLETELY normal
  • Prep ahead of time!! This will be important to your success.  You will want to make sure all you have to do is reach into the fridge to grab your appropriate foods, leaving little to chance.

 

A “Typical” Day:

  • Breakfast: Shakeology with a fruit
  • Mid-Morning: Fiber Sweep
  • Lunch: Vanilla Fresh Shake with a fruit, a vegetable and a healthy fat
  • Afternoon Snack: A vegetable with a healthy fat
  • Dinner: Vanilla Fresh Shake with dinner entrée from list of meal options

 

For me, I’m thinking of this in terms of a cleanse of my eating habits and not like the juice ones some people tend to do.  It isn’t about starving myself, as that is not happening (and not the intent of the 3 Day Refresh) but making sure I am set up for success.  That I get my body and MIND in the right place.

What is going on in my head?

  • Day One: Feeling pretty. Around 3pm, I thought I was going to ravage whatever food was in my house but I stayed the course and decided to chug some water instead.  After dinner it seemed to go away and I was back to feeling fresh.  I did have a minor headache before bed but that seemed to be gone by morning.
  • Day Two: Woke up feeling pretty energized. My slump hit after dinner and that’s also when the gas started.  Luckily hubby is away so it’s just me and “the kids”.
  • Day Three: Woke up feeling tired but in good spirits.  It’s the last day! I just need to get through the next 24 hours and I will have conquered the Refresh.

Fiber Sweep:

  • Tip: Drink it FAST!
  • It actually tastes not bad but the longer you let it sit the more “gritty” it tastes which is not so nice

Vanilla Fresh:

  • You will definitely want to add something to it! For me, it tended to have an almost chalky taste.  So, when you can add your fruit – I was a fan of raspberries or strawberries.  If it’s dinner, then add something like cinnamon or I like mint but I wouldn’t recommend having it plain.

All in all:

  • I’m glad I decided to give it a try. I’m feeling revived and ready to tackle my next workout program.
  • It gave me three days to get my portion controlling back in check and back on track.
  • In the three days, I lost 3 pounds and 1.5 inches off my waist. Not too shabby if you ask me.

Where It All Began

When people ask the question “WHY?” it is so much more powerful a question than they may realize.  It goes much deeper and you wonder, how much time do you have??

On August 15, 2015, I gave birth to the love of my life – Brodie.  It was a roller coaster of fun for the better part of 24 hours.  I was active (for the most part) of my pregnancy and gained roughly 35 pounds by the time little man decided to arrive.  He is my little slice of heaven.  Being a mom is not easy – it is the hardest, most amazing, most rewarding “thing” I’ve ever done in my life.  And now, I can’t imagine my life without him, or what it was like before him.

After I had him, I felt off.  I was emotional.  I was tired.  I was all over the map with my emotions.  I felt disgusting, felt like I looked like an umpa-loompa.  How could my husband possible find me attractive again?  I needed something.  I needed an outlet – some “me” time.

After 5 months, I had lost only 15 of the 35 pounds I had gained.  Breastfeeding wasn’t making the pounds fall off.  So, I knew I needed to make a change while still allowing my body to get the calories and nutrients it needed to feed my tiny, amazing human.   With my husband’s work schedule and not wanting to lose out on time with my family, I didn’t know what to do.  That is when I found Beachbody.

With Beachbody, I was able to workout at home, on my own time and schedule.  The nutrition is easy to follow portion control.   There were no counting calories, no figuring out and counting points.  And I was still getting all the nutrition and calories that I needed to support breastfeeding my son.

It’s been 7 months since I started and I have lost over 40 pounds!! In the last three months, I have lost over 11.5inches!  And I’m not stopping anytime soon!  But it is what I have GAINED that is even greater – confidence, strength, energy, passion  . . . . . . I feel that I have become a better wife and mother.

In the middle of all this, I was also running my small business.  It was an up early, up late work all day kind of job.  There is no rest when you own the business personally.  In the 3 years that I owned it, I had A LOT of life changes.  I got engaged, married, became pregnant, had my son and lost all 3 of my living grandparents.  When I had Brodie, I had no idea that it would change my life quite the way that it had. He become my top priority but unfortunately when you own a business that is your number one responsibility and after ear-infections and high fevers and everything else that came with my precious munchkin I had had ENOUGH of putting him second.  Every time I had an employee not show up for their shift or being broken into twice or legal battles with our slumlord landlord – I knew my heart wasn’t in it anymore.  I knew that while I was my own boss that my family would NEVER come first, it would always be the business.  I knew that I wanted to never again have to sacrifice family time because of my work.  It simply wasn’t worth it to me.  So with a heavy heart, my husband and I decided it was time to move on and close the business.  I wanted Brodie to be my number one and know he was my number one that NOTHING came ahead of him and being his mother.  But when you find out all the countless lives that you’ve changed and the people that started their businesses because of you, it makes you realize the passion you have for health and fitness.  It was time to find another way that would allow me to be with my son and still inspire and motivate others at the same time.

With Beachbody Coaching that has become possible.  There are no set hours, no physical location that needs to be managed.  I can work when and where I need to.  And it gives me the support and accountability that I need to stay on track with my own health and fitness journey while helping others at the same time.  But it has given me so much more than I ever could have imagined in the short time that I have been part of this extraordinary company.

I want my son to learn from me.  I want to be a role model to him that I can be proud of.  I want him to learn to be active and really live life to the fullest.  I want him to learn to DREAM BIG and anything is possible.  With a bit of HEART and HUSTLE you can turn your PASSION into REALITY.

 

Thursday Taste: Spaghetti Squash

I am a lover of all things carb . . and chocolate . . .oh and ice cream!  Just like Oprah “I LOVE BREAD”.  If I could, I would eat pasta daily.   But, unfortunately for me pasta is not a very good friend of my waistline and I’m always looking for more creative ways to get in more veggies.  Enter Spaghetti Squash.

Spaghetti squash is such a great food in that you can actually pair it with quite a lot of –  veggies, meats and other yummy foods, like you would pasta.  This post will be simply for how I like to cook spaghetti squash.  In case you were wondering, my two favorite combos for it are with Bolognese sauce (usually leftover from dinner the night before) or with grilled zucchini, squash, tomatoes, cucumbers and some feta cheese (a favorite during the Summertime).

Now unfortunately to get to this yummy goodness you have to cut through the world’s toughest shell.  No joke.  This is actually something I dread.  So, I have come up with a few helpful tips to make cutting the squash a little bit easier.

Instructions:

  • Pre-heat oven to 450 degrees
  • To make the shell softer and easier for you to cut in half.
    • Make slits around the spaghetti squash, ideally where you will cut it in half
    • Use a fork and poke holes near the slits
    • Microwave your squash for 6 minutes on high

  • Be careful, as your squash will be toasty to the touch
  • Cut your squash in half, following your slits
  • Use a spoon to scoop out all the seeds
  • Place your two halves in a 9×11 baking dish – lightly drizzle olive oil, seasoning on your halves – I like to use Mrs Dash No Salt Seasoning
  • Place the halves upside-down in the baking dish
  • Cover the bottom of the baking dish with water (just enough to cover the bottom of the dish so you won’t need much)

  • Place in the oven for about 45 minutes
  • Use a fork to “shred” the spaghetti squash
  • Serve and enjoy!

Centered Mind, Yoga Bum – How I Found My Inner Yogini

My thoughts on yoga have always been the same –  that it’s a slow, boring yet fundamental practice, similar to ballet for me.  Growing up dancing, I always knew the importance of the practice.  If you have a strong foundation, everything else can build from that.  But unlike ballet, I stayed far away from any form of yoga class.  That was until I became pregnant with my little man.  Your body goes through so many changes that I knew integrating yoga into my workout routine would be truly beneficial as my body grew and changed, both for me and the baby.  Unfortunately, my first experience was less than ideal.  Like any other workout class, the instructor is key and mine was just not my cup of tea.  It was less about stretching and moving your body and more about connecting with it spiritually.  Yeah, I’m good, but thanks.  Let’s just say I did not go back.  For the remainder of my pregnancy, I took to my mat at home.

 

Fast forward a few months, I have an adorable infant boy and this momma was wanting to get out of the house, connect with my new bundle of joy and stretch out the aches and pains that this new mother was feeling from trying to carry him as much as I could.  To the world wide web I go and into my life walks Haillie Dumont and Vega Vitality.  Since finding this class we have been every week, no questions.  Haillie is truly a pleasure to learn from, extremely knowledgeable and Brodeman loves her!  The class is Mom & Baby Yoga.  The space is beautiful and pint-sized, perfect for small group classes.  The view of Copley Square from the studio doesn’t hurt either!

 

Mom and Baby Yoga is the perfect meld of time spent practicing with your baby and time spent on you and your needs as a mother.  Haillie always starts out the class asking if there are any special requests for areas of our body that we would like to focus attention on that day.  So you know she cares about you and doesn’t have a generic set of poses and stretches already set out.  Class then begins by stretching out your munchkin – lengthening his/her arms and legs, doing cross-body stretches, rolling out their hips.  After about 20 minutes of focus on your baby, class then moves on to the mothers.  She is really great about making sure you have proper alignment and that the moves are truly targeting those areas that needed further work.  The little ones get to hang out with you on their own yoga mat, on your yoga mat, visiting their neighbor baby or in their car seat in the room.  My little man pretty much spends the time rolling about giggling with his favorite giraffe or flirting with the other ladies.  Class always ends with savasana.  If at anytime during class you need to feed your infant, change them or do anything at all, you can feel free.  It’s a very warm and welcoming environment.

I will definitely miss this class once the little man becomes more mobile!

Thursday Taste: Lamb Chops

To say my husband is a meat and potatoes guy would be the understatement of the year.  Since I am hardly Martha Stewart in the kitchen, I am working to build my manly-dish repertoire.  First up is lamb chops.

 

Ingredients:

  • 5lbs lamb chops
  • 1 whole onion
  • 1 cup carrots
  • 1 potato
  • 2tbsp (minced) garlic
  • 3tbsp balsamic vinegar
  • salt & pepper to taste

Instructions:

  • Slice your onion into rounds – place the rounds at the bottom of your crockpot
  • Place your lamb chops on top of the sliced onion in the crockpot
  • I like to cook my potato and carrot before putting them into the crockpot to soften them up. Chop up the potato and about a cup of carrots.  Put them in a bowl with water (just enough to cover your vegetables) and put them in the microwave for about 4-5min to soften them up.  Drain out the water.  Put the slightly cooked potato and carrots into the crockpot around the lamb chops.
  • Add in your garlic, balsamic vinegar and salt & pepper
  • Cook on low for at least 6 hours
  • The longer you cook them, the more tender and juicier they will be.

Thursday Taste: Turkey Meatloaf

I have to thank my sister for introducing me to this next recipe.  Up until she made it for me on a recent trip to visit her, I had always had a negative impression of Meatloaf or associated it with Will Ferrell in the movie The Wedding Crasher (“MAA MORE MEATLOAF”).  But I have to admit I had been wrong, Meatloaf can be pretty tasty!

This recipe is courtesy of Giada De Laurentiis with the exception of a couple ingredient changes.

I still haven’t gotten my husband on the bandwagon, so I like to make this recipe and store in the fridge for my lunch.  Relatively simple to make and much better than what I probably would be eating otherwise.

 

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup plain dried bread crumbs
  • 1/3 cup chopped parsley leaves
  • 1/3 cup chopped marinated sun-dried tomatoes
  • 2 tbsp minced garlic
  • 2 large organic eggs
  • ¼ cup olive oil
  • ½ cup crumbled feta cheese
  • 2 tbsp Mrs Dash Salt-Free Seasoning
  • 1 lb ground turkey

 

Instructions:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees
  • In a large bowl, combine and stir bread crumbs, parsley, tomatoes, garlic, eggs, olive oil, feta and Mrs Dash
  • Slowly add in the ground turkey
  • Once all ingredients have been thoroughly mixed together, carefully pack the mixture into a 9×5 nonstick loaf pan (sprayed with cooking spray)
  • Mixture should fill the pan about halfway
  • Bake until the internal temp reaches 165 degrees – roughly 40 – 45 minutes
  • Remove the pan from the oven and let cool for about 5 minutes
  • Slice and ENJOY!

Welcome to My Journey.

Until about 5 months ago, my life was completely different – I was always able to do things on my time – work out anytime, my husband and I could have date nights at the spur of the moment, we could jump in the car and just go and then the best day of my life happened.  I gave birth to the love of my life!  Having my sweet baby boy brought about new emotions and changes – life changes, body changes, time changes. My life now revolved around this amazing, growing mini version of my husband.  With my health and fitness always having been a huge part of my life, I wanted to change what “mom bod” always seemed to mean.  For me, I wanted it to be fit, happy and healthy.   So, here is my journey – all things fit mom, bouncing baby, passionate life.
