80 Day Obsession – Fight For Me

For the last year, my motivation has been on a roller-coaster ride.  I allowed external “things” to get in my way, to control my emotions and get in my head, clouding my goals.

We moved house, which I actually wanted.  I have been working through postpartum anxiety.  I have nerve issues in my back that I let get the best of me.

All of these took its toll on me, throwing me a curve-ball that I didn’t quite know how to deal with.  Finally, in December, I had enough and was ready to push myself through, gaining control of myself back and getting back to working on a stronger, healthier me not just for myself but for my family.  My son is my everything and I didn’t want him to watch me give in, to say screw-it but to fight for me.

In January, my company was launching a brand new program that I just knew was exactly what I needed and at just the right time.  But, I had no idea just what that effect was going to be and just how life-changing it was for me.

What I’ve learned in the last 44 DAYS:

  • I have the ability to let the scale determine my CONFIDENCE, my WORTH, ME
  • The scale is only a number.  You hear that so often but I used to be someone who got on the scale every morning and let that number determine my day. How happy I was or sad or defeated I felt, all based on that ONE NUMBER.
  • The problem is that it is just a number.  YOU ARE SO MUCH MORE THAN THAT.
  • I am stronger than I think. At times, I doubted myself but when I chose the heavier weights I felt empowered by MY OWN STRENGTH
  • This is MY JOURNEY, stop comparing yourself to anyone else, that can also led to you feeling defeated and not being proud of you own accomplishments
  • It is more MENTAL than you think.  You can do anything you set your mind to.
  • It is OKAY TO MODIFY.  Previously, I would allow my back pain to be an EXCUSE for me to not workout.  Now I know that it is simply a matter of modifying the moves that I need to

Since starting on my NEW JOURNEY 44 DAYS AGO, I have only allowed myself to get on the scale once a week for my weekly check-in but with it, I also check my measurements and take my photos.  This has helped me to see a WHOLE VERSION of the work I am putting in.

These last 44 DAYS have also shown me that this is truly a journey, it never ends.  I will never give up on myself or my health.  Once you feel like you’ve “completed” a program, you start to let things slip which simply creates a downward spiral to going back to you OLD WAYS.  Think of this as the beginning of your journey.

Take time to truly work on your self.  There is so much power in taking some time for yourself.  It could be in taking a bath or getting a massage or sitting outside with a good book.  It has more effect on your mind, body and soul than you may think.

During these first 44 DAYS, I was away from home for 9 of them and I still worked out and did my best to stay on track with my nutrition without feeling deprived.  I set myself up as best as I could for SUCCESS while on vacation.

Don’t ever give up. Focus on those non-scale victories and remember this is a JOURNEY.

So far I’m down 6lbs, 10 inches and I’m not stopping

Mommy Needs A Minute

Gone are the days of me thinking of it solely as “Self-Care Sunday”, now I feel like it’s better to happen whenever YOU need it.  With an, at-times, blurry line of work/life balance and more and more people working to get healthier, this is something that should be happening more than simply once a week.

 

It’s not only about healing muscles, but in relaxing your mind and spirit too.  Being overworked and stretched to the limit can have serious effects on you on all levels.

 

I have found in the last year that I can have a habit of slacking on my self-care, and I know, as a mom, we all have this tendency.  You put everyone else first and then, when and if there is anything left, that is when you take care of you.

 

When you focus on YOU, then you will become better with taking care of everyone else.

 

Here are some great ways to give YOURSELF a little TLC:

  • Meditation: A simple way to start. Give yourself an extra 5 or 10 minutes every morning or evening to relax your mind.  You can do this yourself by getting into a quiet space, sit or lie down, close your eyes and just focus on your breathing.  You can also find some great (free) apps to help with this, if you would like more a guided meditation.
  • Bath: Add some Epsom salt for tired, sore muscles, maybe some candles or dimly light the room for a bit more peace
  • Massage: Please Mamma’s . . need I say more?!?
  • Manicure / Pedicure: I’m not a big manicure fan.  I just don’t seem to find it relaxing but I LOVE a good pedicure!  I like to listen to audio books, close my eyes and zone out.
  • Yoga Class: Hot or not, it just feels good to stretch it all out.  Get out of your head and let the chill yogi vibes (???) take over.
  • Foam Rolling: I won’t lie; this was a bit strange for me at first but go with me here. These are great for helping with muscle relief.  They come in what feels like a million variations so if you are new to this maybe go check some out at the store.  Places like Target or Dick’s carry them.  Start slow and build your way up.  I know add this to the stretching portion after almost every workout.
  • Sleep: This is so much more crucial to having a healthy body and mind than most people give it credit for. Start by tracking your sleep and seeing how you feel.  How many hours a night do you get?  Is it hard for you to fall asleep?  Do you struggle in the morning?  Maybe you could try going to bed a little earlier each night or giving yourself some time to simply relax before hitting the sack to see if that helps you.

Run, Don’t Walk, Away From Resolutions

If I learned anything from the past 2 years, it’s to say *SCREW RESOLUTIONS* and make some EPIC GOALS instead.  I’ve found that when we do the typical NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS, we make them vague and almost haphazard.

 

“I want to lose weight.”

“I want to get healthy.”

“I want to get a new job.”

 

But, that completely loses sight of the question, well, how are you going to get there?  What happens if you don’t lose weight in the first week, first month, etc of that new year?  Are you going to give up?  Throw in the towel?

 

Wouldn’t it be better to give yourself attainable goals?  Or BIG-A$$ Goals that you can quantify?  You can see that progress is being made?  If you could tell you were working towards a goal, even if making baby steps, would that not keep you going?

 

I was that person to always say, this year, I’m going to workout and lose weight.  I’m going to eat better but then February or maybe even March rolls around and I start to slack, which in turn snowballs into me completely forgetting all about that New Year’s Resolution come June.

 

Now is the time to set yourself up for SUCCESS, to keep going no matter what.  Instead of simply saying “I want to lose weight”, why not say “This year, I want to lose 15 pounds”?  Then you can quantify that along the way.  In 12 months, that’s under 1.5 pounds a month.  That seems doable, don’t you think?!?  Then when you don’t lose those 15 pounds in your first month, you are less likely to throw in the towel.

 

This year, that is what I have done.  But in all aspects of my life.

 

This year:

  • I will read 10 personal development books
  • I will workout 250 times
  • I will lose 20 pounds to be back at my “fighting weight”
  • I will set aside 2 nights a month for a date night with my husband
  • I will set aside once a week to do some self-care for myself

Thursday Taste: Easy Egg Cups

This is real life.

I’m not a chef. I’m not trained. I’ve actually always had this thought that cooking was meant to be hard, take a long time to make anything worthwhile and always steered towards the “easy” way.

Truth is. I am simply a mom, trying to make a healthy lifestyle change for myself and my family.

Truth is. Most of the meals I make are NOT “Instagram worthy”. But you know what. That is real life. That is mom life.

Truth is. Most of the time I suck the first time I make something. But I keep at it. I keep trying.

And today I learned that I will not use baking cups when making egg cups again . . . 

Ingredients:

  • Nonstick spray or reusable silicone baking cups
  • 1/2 cup Almond Milk
  • 2 cups Egg Whites
  • 1 cup chopped peppers and onions
  • Dash of himalayan salt and ground pepper, if desired

 

Instructions:

1. Preheat oven to 350° F.

2. Line a twelve-cup muffin tin with fun silicone baking cups or spray with nonstick cooking spray. Set aside.

3. Combine almond milk and egg whites in a medium bowl. Season with salt and pepper, if desired; whisk to blend. Set aside.

4. Evenly divide chopped peppers and onion between prepared muffin cups.

5. Evenly pour egg white mixture over onions and peppers.

6. Bake for 20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of egg cups comes out clean, and eggs are set.

7. Enjoy!

As a momma, a good wrap sweater is a necessity.  You can dress it up with jeans and heals or down with leggings and sneakers.  Plus, this one was the perfect cover for me while breastfeeding.

Running around the house with my tiny human means I am always looking for awesomeness that makes mommin more fun (didn’t think that was possible) and easier.  This fun toy fits that bill!  There are so many features that I uncover virtually daily but what I use it for most is checking the weather before bundling up my little guy to head out, adding items I may or may not have run out of to my shopping list and cranking some tunes.  All done hands-free!

Thursday Taste: Apple Butternut Squash Soup

Fall and winter are the perfect time to cozy up with a yummy bowl of soup.  Butternut squash is one of my favorites so I thought why not add some apples, make it crockpot friendly and give you something extra special from my kitchen to yours!

 

Apple Butternut Squash Soup

 

Cooking Time: 6-8 hours

Yield: 8 servings

 

Ingredients:

  • 4 lbs. butternut squash
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 5 medium Jonathon (or Granny Smith) apples, peeled, chopped
  • 4 cups low-sodium organic chicken broth
  • 1 thin slice fresh ginger, peeled, finely chopped
  • ¼ tsp. ground nutmeg
  • 1 cup nonfat milk
  • 2 tsp Honey
  • 1 tsp Sea Salt
  • 2 tsp. Mrs. Dash No Salt Seasoning

Preparation:

  1. Prepare and cut the Squash into chunks
    1. Poke holes in the Squash using a fork
    2. Place in the microwave for 5 minutes to soften
    3. Peel the squash then cut and de-seed the squash
  1. Place all ingredients in crockpot

  1. Cook on low for 6 – 8hours
  2. Use immersion blender to blend until smooth.
  3. If you find your soup is too bitter, start by adding some honey to it and blend. Squash can vary in taste so you may need to amend this recipe as needed.
  4. Serve and enjoy!
