BREAK IT DOWN: The Ultimate Reset

I’m going to get REAL with you for a minute here.  I just conquered the Beachbody Ultimate Reset and I’m here to tell you all about it.  It’s a 21 day cleanse for your whole body broken into three weeklong segments.  Each week comes with its own set of challenges but believe me when I tell you that you still get to eat, it’s just under strict guidelines.  This is no juice cleanse.  It is not a quick fix.  It is about retraining your brain and your body with how you look at nutrition, how you process food.  This is about getting rid of bad habits that may be stumping your progress and hopefully creating new ones.

Each week you will cut more and more out of your diet.  Starting with refined foods and animal products then eventually grains and legumes, which will have you eating a diet of fruits and veggies for your final week.  I loved that it was a gradual process and not cutting everything out all at once.

Each day you will eat 3 meals and 1 snack (which is optional).  And yes you can still have your Shakeology, of the Vegan variety (of which there are now more options!!)
For me, doing this detox was about getting over a plateau that I had been struggling with ever since I stopped breastfeeding my son.  It was about stripping down my nutrition to figure out what is and what isn’t working well with my body.
There were two issues that came up for me while on the reset: First, NO WORKING OUT FOR 21 DAYS.  That was more of a struggle for me than I ever thought it would be. But when you spend the last year focusing on your health and fitness, my workouts had become more of an outlet for me and I didn’t fully realize that until this moment.  And second, I was forced to cook up three separate meals every night.  Yikes.  My son has quite a few allergies so he gets his own dinner, then my husband and finally my own dinner.  This got old for me real quick so lucky for me they also have what they call the “Reset In A Crunch” meal plan which became my saving grace.
Here is a sampling of my meals during my 21 Days:
I won’t lie to you.  I did have a cheat or 2 during my 21 days.  But I didn’t let it get me off track and I jumped right back on the plan ASAP.  It is also imperative that you hydrate, so lots and lots of water.  Aim for a gallon of water a day.

This program is hard but YOU WILL GET RESULTS!  Stick with it for 21 days and you will feel better, you will lose weight, you will cleanse your body of all that nasty stuff, you will have created better habits and broken yourself of bad habits.
My results were quite astounding: down exactly 10 pounds and over 4 inches in my waist and hips alone.  But now it’s about how I continue to keep moving forward and not ruin my results by going back to my old ways.

Where It All Began

When people ask the question “WHY?” it is so much more powerful a question than they may realize.  It goes much deeper and you wonder, how much time do you have??

On August 15, 2015, I gave birth to the love of my life – Brodie.  It was a roller coaster of fun for the better part of 24 hours.  I was active (for the most part) of my pregnancy and gained roughly 35 pounds by the time little man decided to arrive.  He is my little slice of heaven.  Being a mom is not easy – it is the hardest, most amazing, most rewarding “thing” I’ve ever done in my life.  And now, I can’t imagine my life without him, or what it was like before him.

After I had him, I felt off.  I was emotional.  I was tired.  I was all over the map with my emotions.  I felt disgusting, felt like I looked like an umpa-loompa.  How could my husband possible find me attractive again?  I needed something.  I needed an outlet – some “me” time.

After 5 months, I had lost only 15 of the 35 pounds I had gained.  Breastfeeding wasn’t making the pounds fall off.  So, I knew I needed to make a change while still allowing my body to get the calories and nutrients it needed to feed my tiny, amazing human.   With my husband’s work schedule and not wanting to lose out on time with my family, I didn’t know what to do.  That is when I found Beachbody.

With Beachbody, I was able to workout at home, on my own time and schedule.  The nutrition is easy to follow portion control.   There were no counting calories, no figuring out and counting points.  And I was still getting all the nutrition and calories that I needed to support breastfeeding my son.

It’s been 7 months since I started and I have lost over 40 pounds!! In the last three months, I have lost over 11.5inches!  And I’m not stopping anytime soon!  But it is what I have GAINED that is even greater – confidence, strength, energy, passion  . . . . . . I feel that I have become a better wife and mother.

In the middle of all this, I was also running my small business.  It was an up early, up late work all day kind of job.  There is no rest when you own the business personally.  In the 3 years that I owned it, I had A LOT of life changes.  I got engaged, married, became pregnant, had my son and lost all 3 of my living grandparents.  When I had Brodie, I had no idea that it would change my life quite the way that it had. He become my top priority but unfortunately when you own a business that is your number one responsibility and after ear-infections and high fevers and everything else that came with my precious munchkin I had had ENOUGH of putting him second.  Every time I had an employee not show up for their shift or being broken into twice or legal battles with our slumlord landlord – I knew my heart wasn’t in it anymore.  I knew that while I was my own boss that my family would NEVER come first, it would always be the business.  I knew that I wanted to never again have to sacrifice family time because of my work.  It simply wasn’t worth it to me.  So with a heavy heart, my husband and I decided it was time to move on and close the business.  I wanted Brodie to be my number one and know he was my number one that NOTHING came ahead of him and being his mother.  But when you find out all the countless lives that you’ve changed and the people that started their businesses because of you, it makes you realize the passion you have for health and fitness.  It was time to find another way that would allow me to be with my son and still inspire and motivate others at the same time.

With Beachbody Coaching that has become possible.  There are no set hours, no physical location that needs to be managed.  I can work when and where I need to.  And it gives me the support and accountability that I need to stay on track with my own health and fitness journey while helping others at the same time.  But it has given me so much more than I ever could have imagined in the short time that I have been part of this extraordinary company.

The Lowdown – 21 Day Fix

It’s about to go down – your weight that is!  As I break down the 21 Day Fix nutrition plan for YOU.

I once saw a video of someone who said they disliked the fact that it was called “Fix” because that implied that something was broken but the fact is that 21 Day Fix is in fact fixing something that is broken – eating habits.  Right now more than one-third of US Adults are obese and almost one-fourth of adolescents.  Let’s be honest, that is not good.  But I’m not here to talk stats, I’m here to help YOU change your life.  And a big part of that is understanding how to eat healthy and get your nutrition in check.

What I love about the 21 Day Fix is that is simple, easy to follow, portion control.  You aren’t told you CAN’T eat certain food groups or that you have to count calories or points.  Basically, if it fits in it’s appropriate container, you can eat it!  Yeah!

 

Here are some basics for you:

  • When you order the 21 Day Fix, it comes with 7 color-coded containers:
    • Green Container (Vegetables): 1 1/4 cups
    • Purple Container (Fruits): 1 1/4 cups
    • Red Container (Protein): 3/4 cups
    • Yellow Container (Carbs): 1/2 cups
    • Blue Container (Healthy Fats and Nuts): 1/4 cups
    • Orange Container (Seeds and Dressings): 2 tbsp.
  • How do I know how many of each container I can have in a day?
    • Simple calculation that you are given, which is also included in your package
  • Don’t feel like you have to eat all your containers. If you aren’t hungry, then don’t eat for the sake of eating.
  • If you find you need more food, start by adding a Green Container first.
  • You will want to spread your containers out throughout the day – between 3 meals and 2 snacks, roughly 2-3 hours apart. This will help keep your metabolism going and burning throughout the day.

This plan is about teaching you to eat clean, healthy food.  It is not a diet but a way to a healthier life that will become a lifestyle for you.

The Scoop – 21 Day Fix!

It’s everywhere – ads on tv, posts on Facebook, friends were talking about it – so I had to make sure it was my first full workout when joining the Beachbody family.  What am I talking about – 21 Day Fix.

Every Beachbody program has two components to it – nutrition / meal plan and the workouts.   As with all of their programs, a third component does exist as part of the nutrition – Shakeology.  For those who don’t know about Shakeology, I will only begin to scratch the surface of it as I could go on and on about the details and benefits.  It is a nutritious superfood, that for me has given me more energy, curbed my cravings, provided me with a great source of all my daily nutrients and curbed the symptoms of IBS.  That’s just to name a few!  All each program asks it that you swap out one meal a day for a Shakeology Shake.  It is not a weight-loss shake, although it does help you to lose weight.

With the 21 Day Fix and the 21 Day Fix Extreme, the nutrition is based off following a simple and easy to follow container system with step-by-step instructions.  When you sign up for the program, along with the workouts and nutrition plan, you are sent a set of (7) color-coded containers.  Each container is labeled for a specific food group – Red for protein, Yellow for carbs, Green for vegetables, Purple for fruits, Blue for healthy fats and cheese, and (2) Orange for seeds and oils.  They lay out instructions for how you are to calculate how many of each container you are allowed to consume per day so there is no grey area.  It’s all based off your current weight and lifestyle.  Don’t worry, you will not starve!  Just remember, this is not a diet but your next step to living a healthier life.

I did the 21 Day Fix Extreme so it was a rotation of 7 workouts, no rest day.  Each workout is completely different so your body doesn’t have time to get used to the moves before moving on – Pliyo Fix, Upper Fix, Lower Fix, Cardio Fix, Yoga Fix, Dirty 30 Fix and Pilates Fix.  Even though it’s called Extreme, they still have a modifier for the program so don’t feel too intimidated by the name.  Here is a sampling of each workout, done by yours truly.

I found the workouts to be fun, engaging and Autumn a great motivator.  You go through roughly 4 rounds of exercises so you are constantly moving and don’t have time to get bored.  Because you only do each move 30 – 60 seconds it makes the time go by faster, so while the workouts are only 30 minutes, it doesn’t even feel like that long.  Plus, you can do anything for 60 seconds!!  All you need is a set of heavy weights, light weights, resistance band and yoga mat (optional).

Now for the part you’re really reading this post for . . .my results.  In 21 days, I lost 6lbs and 8.5 inches.  In 21 days, I have become stronger, fitter and committed to a healthier lifestyle.

As a sidenote, I am breastfeeding so I increased my nutrition plan to the bracket above what the plan suggests to ensure I was getting enough calories to feed my son properly!

Overall, I love the 21 Day Fix Extreme – the variety of the workouts, the easy to follow meal plan, the fact that I have a bad knee so I have to be careful about too much jumping and I didn’t have any issues and each workout is only 30 minutes.  All in all, I will definitely be doing it again!
